What We Are Hearing: "We Have to See if Kirby Smart Can Get UGA Over the Hump"

ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs will be confronted with the biggest season opener in his tenure in fewer than three months. 

And more than a few folks have noticed what Kirby and the Dawgs have coming into the season. 

“This is probably as good a chance on paper as you would think Georgia may have to get over the top. They've been close. And you feel like they are close. A lot of recruits have bought into that,” longtime college football reporter Bruce Feldman told Paul Fienbaum in June. “I don't know if it is now or never, but it seems like this is a really ripe window for them to make a run at the national title. Florida has to replace not just a quarterback, but Kyle Pitts, the best player they have had there in a decade. (Florida) was not very good on defense. You look at Alabama. They had a great team last year, but they have to replace a lot of guys. It is not to say they are going to fall apart.”

“Now we have to see if Kirby Smart can get them over the hump,” he added. 

But the start of June could play a part in that as Kirby secured the transfer of two impact players at positions of need - Arik Gilbert and Derion Kendrick. Most insiders felt good about Kendrick transferring to UGA after he left Clemson. Gilbert’s final destination was a much less certain proposition. 

Nonetheless, this off-season the Bulldogs secured two transfers in the secondary to bolster what was considered one of the few weaknesses on the roster. Adding Gilbert has been seen as a way to deal with missing out on George Pickens while he deals with the recovery from his ACL injury
