One day after the first American tested positive for COVID-19, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Dr. Fauci said:

"Obviously, you need to take it seriously and do the kind of things that the CDC and the Department of Homeland Security are doing. But this is not a major threat for the people of the United States. And this is not something that the citizens of the United States right now should be worried about."

Fauci on 11 April 2020:

"Early on we did not get correct information. And the incorrect information was propagated right from the beginning because you know when the first cases came out, that were identified I think on December 31st in China and we became aware of this, they said this was just animal to human period. Now we know retrospectively that there was ongoing transmission from human to human in China, probably at least a few weeks before then."
